Jill Scott Is Married: See Her Gorgeous Wedding Look

Congrats to Jill Scott and Mike Dobson!

The 44-year-old Grammy-winning soul singer married her beau Saturday, as seen in photos and videos the groom's friend DJ Mars posted on his Instagram page. The couple has not commented.

"So my man called me a year ago and said, 'Mars I need you to DJ my wedding...don't get booked on June 25th 2016!'" he wrote. "He came to my house and gave me the deposit early, but he didn't say he was marrying Jill Scott!!!!! Damn homie!!!!!!!!!!"

The bride looked gorgeous and radiant in a white low-cut gown with long lace sleeves and a silver sparkling belt and waved a small fan to keep cool. She also sported white clips in her hair, which she wore up, and a long veil. The groom wore a black tux. Arrangements of white and pink roses adorned tables at the wedding.

"This wedding made my summer!" Mars wrote. "I've known Mike for almost 20 years, but dude could have alluded to the fact that he was marrying Jill Scott(lol)! All he said was, u are working with her in Vegas. He's a total class act, he won with the wedding! #djmarsapproved."

"I teared up when she came...I'm gonna tear up now," Dobson said in a wedding speech at the reception.

In addition to Mars, the wedding reception also featured a surprise performer: Grammy-winning rapper Big Daddy Kane.

"So, Mike Dobson called me and said, 'I'm going to surprise my wife during the reception and have Big Daddy Kane perform,'" Mars wrote on Instagram. "He then says, 'Mars you call Kane to work it out.' So im gassed because I'm on the phone strategizing with arguably one of the best rappers period (top 5 of anyone's list)! Me and Big Daddy Kane on the phone, im geeked! No one knew but me and the husband knew he was about to perform. Dude walks in and they didn't even recognize h

My favorite Jill Scott song is “He Loves Me,” from her first album, Who Is Jill Scott? Words and Sounds Vol. 1. Jill illustrates a love felt “in every way imaginable,” from her hair follicle to her toenails. She starts in a coo, transitions into spoken word, and ends in what sounds like a full-on tribal cry. At times when performing it live she renders it like an opera, in Spanish or both.

The full title of the song is actually, “He Loves Me (Lyzel In E Flat).” Lyzel Williams was Scott’s first husband, from 2001 to 2007. Her Saturday wedding to Mike Dobson is her second.

This is to say that Jill Scott has sung about receiving love from a man, and enjoying it, totally. She has sung about parting ways with men, too. She has sung about sex, and enjoying that totally. And she has sung about loving herself. At no time do I ever get the sense that one state of being is better than another. Marriage was never presented by her as a destination or a prize. It is, rather, one phase in the unfolding of life — something to enjoy in the present and learn from if it becomes the past.

Be honest: You’ve heard people say, “I liked sad Mary better.” The common sentiment is that Mary J. Blige’s music was better before she became happily married. I resent that, but maybe her pain was more raw than her love, and the art that resonated sprang from that place. Jill, by comparison, has always struck me as complete in her personhood. Her joy emotes just as vividly as her hurt. “It’s just me / one is the magic number,” she sang back in 2000. I bought that just like I dug it when she sang, “You’re here, I’m pleased / I really dig your company” to a dude she just wanted to take a long walk around the park with.

People are allowed to change and grow, and Jill has done me the service of bringing me along on her journey. Around 2008, she announced that she was engaged to her drummer. The relationship ended shortly after their son was born in 2009. I think we all know not to mix love and

  • Jill Scott Was Married Twice — a Look Back at the Singer's Relationship History

Jill Scott has taken a chance of love more than once, and the mistakes she has made her wary and wise -- but always hopeful.

Three years after her divorce from second husband Mike Dobson, singer/ songwriter Jill Scott opened up about her relationships and the mistakes that led to heartbreak

But even though she had her heart broken, and her illusions shattered, the singer refuses to give up on love, although she confesses she is now a lot more cautious.

    JILL SCOTT IN LOVE

At 48, singer/ songwriter Scott has been around the merry-go-round a few times. Love never comes easy, and like so many of us, Scott has fallen in and out of love.

Scott had her heart broken, got up, dusted herself off, and did it all, all over again. After 3 failed long-term relationships -- two of them culminating in marriages -- Scott still believes in love, but on her own terms.

    FIRST LOVE AND FIRST MARRIAGE

At 29, Scott married graphic artist Lyzel Williams in a romantic 2001 wedding ceremony in Hawaii. Scott and Williams had been dating for seven years. Scott had met Williams at a poetry reading, and said of him:

"He's a man, not a boy trying to be a man. He's steadfast and strong. Every day in his walk, he carries a love and respect for his woman."

It was Williams that inspired Scott to write the love song, "He Loves Me Lyzel in E Flat," in which she describes their love. She wrote:

"You're different and special in every way imaginable/ You love me from my hair follicles to my toenails."

    THE END OF THE DREAM

But the idyll came to an end after seven years of marriage. Scott's first hint that something was wrong was when Williams stopped eating the food she cooked. She
