Micro review: 'Queen of Fire' by Devika Rangachari

'Queen of Fire' by award-winning children's writer and historian Devika Rangachari is a gripping novel in which she sheds light on the brave queen and fearsome warrior Rani Lakshmibai of Jhansi whose cry of revolt against the British Raj mobilized thousands of Indian soldiers to become a part of the 1057 National Uprising.
Published by Penguin Random House India in April 2021, Rangachari's book is meant for readers aged 13-17.It focuses on Lakshmibai's journey as a queen, soldier, and statesman. She gives a detailed account of how Lakshmibai took control of an unsteady kingdom as a widow, dealt with the British ambassadors, and joined forces with several revolutionaries for rebelling against the East India Company.
Furthermore, the story brings out the interesting aspects, dilemmas of the queen of having been literally forced to leave her motherland, her palace, her kingdom amongst personal turmoil. She had become a widow at a young age and was a mother who wanted to fight for her rights, her child’s rights, and her people.
"Lakshmibai, the widowed queen of Jhansi, is determined to protect her son's right to his father's throne and safeguard the welfare of her kingdom. Faced with machinations to take over Jhansi, at a time when all of India is rising up against the British, she has to prove her valour and sagacity time and again. But will this be enough to save all that she values?" reads the book's blurb.
In this novel, Rangachari "brings to vivid life the interior life of this 19th-century queen, thrust into a position she does not desire but must assume, and of her son, who is cowed by the challenges he has to face but determined to live up to his mother's courage," it adds.
Finally, the book beautifully combines history with fiction. Most of its characters and settings are rooted in history, while some others are fictional and don't
