She is visible in the background as the cashier at Monk's in almost every episode that features the interior of the cafe as a setting from Season 4 onward. Newman48Wayne KnightFellow tenant in Jerry and Kramer's apartment building. A heavyset male U.S. postal worker and Jerry's nemesis. A catchphrase of Jerry's is that he greets him with a contemptuous disdainful "Hello, Newman" each time they meet. In "The Raincoats", Helen Seinfeld addresses Newman with the same tone. In "The Revenge", only Newman's voice is heard, which was originally voiced by Larry David and rerecorded for syndication. Newman often speaks in an exaggeratedly dramatic, Shakespearean way, and generally has a more advanced vocabulary than other characters. Newman is also noted for his poetry.

His first name appears to be unknown by any of the characters, even his employer; in "The Package" his business card gives his name merely as "NEWMAN". A minor character calls him "Norman" in "The Bottle Deposit", but this was a mistake on the part of the actress/character, rather than any revelation of Newman's first name. Newman is petty, vindictive, prone to hysteria, and often depicted as a stereotypical evil genius, who is usually undermined in some way. Jerry's exasperation or epiphany involving Newman will cause him to clench his fist and mutter "Newman!" under his breath. Newman and Kramer are usually depicted as casual friends, and the two sometimes participate in various unsuccessful moneymaking schemes together.

Newman has been shown to harbor unrequited romantic feelings for Elaine.

Billye Ree Wallace

Character actress Billye Ree Wallace, who appeared in numerous TV series including “Seinfeld” and “Mad About You,” died Wednesday of respiratory failure and emphysema at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. She was 73.

Wallace is perhaps best remembered as Jerry Seinfeld’s nana on “Seinfeld.” She also portrayed spirited, slightly off-center old ladies in sitcoms such as “Dream On,” “Coach,” “Ellen” and “Who’s the Boss.”

She was equally successful in TV commercials, including the popular Del Monte salsa “three Chihuahuas, please!” commercial.

Wallace trained with Stella Adler and performed in more than 50 plays. She was one of the founders of the Gem Theater in Garden Grove, which became the home of the Grove Shakespeare Festival.

She appeared in a handful of films, the last a turn as the wacky old lady in the grocery store in the 1996 Albert Brooks-Debbie Reynolds starrer “Mother.”

She is survived by her mother, a sister, eight grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

A celebration of her life will be held at 12:30 p.m. on March 20 at the Stella Adler Theater in Hollywood. A reception will follow. For more information, call (310) 657-6064.

Jerry Seinfeld turned 70 this week, and TV fans have been left in shock as they realised that now makes him older than his on-screen 'Nana'.

The sitcom, which ran from 1989 until 1998, followed stand-up comedian Seinfeld alongside his New York pals.

This year, the show ended up making Seinfeld a billionaire, though he turned down an offer to return for a tenth season despite a massive pay increase.

Actress Billye Ree Wallace was a secondary character, playing Jerry's grandmother in the series.

In the 80s and 90s, when the series aired, she was thought to be in her 70s, but Wallace would have actually been 64 when she played the role, making her younger than Seinfeld is now.

The ages add up, but people on Reddit have been left scratching their heads as they work it out.

A post with a meme showing Nana, reads: "Jerry Seinfeld turns 70 today. If that's not mindblowing enough, he is now older than Billye Ree Wallace was when she played his Nana in Seinfeld.

Writing on the Reddit thread, one person replied: "Weird to me how people just used to look older at the same age compared to now."

Reddit users have been left baffled by the realisation that Jerry Seinfield is now older than 'Nana'. (Reddit)

Another shared: "I had no clue he was in his 40s for half the show."

"Nana was a good character but that casting made no sense. Her 'kids' Helen and Leo were the around the same age as her," pointed out a third.

A fourth added: "How do older generations look so much older than current generations at the same age?"

To which someone replied: "That’s a good question…. Me and peeps are all in our early 50s and we passing for 30s… and reme
