    Terrell Eldorado Owens (; born December 7, 1973), also known by his initials "T.O.", is an American former professional footballwide receiver who played 15 seasons in the National Football League (NFL). Regarded as one of the greatest wide receivers of all time, Owens ranks third in NFL history in career receiving yards and receiving touchdowns.

    Owens played college football for the Chattanooga Mocs and was selected in the third round of the 1996 NFL draft by the San Francisco 49ers. He was a member of the team for seven seasons until he was traded to the Philadelphia Eagles in 2004. Two years later, he signed with the Dallas Cowboys, where he spent three seasons. Owens NFL career concluded after one season each with the Buffalo Bills and Cincinnati Bengals. He later played for the Allen Wranglers of the Indoor Football League (IFL) in 2012 and last played professionally with Fan Controlled Football (FCF) in 2022.

    A six-time Pro Bowl and five-time first-team All-Pro selection, Owens also created a significant amount of controversy during his professional career and attracted attention for his flamboyant touchdown celebrations. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2018.

    GROWING UP

    Terrell Eldorado Owens was born December 7, 1973, in Alexander City, Alabama. (Click here for today's sports birthdays.) Terrell was the first son to his mother, Marilyn Heard. Only 17 at the time, she was the product of a dysfunctional family herself. Most of Marilyn's childhood was spent in fear and silence. Her mother, Alice, was reportedly cruel to her children (though this claim has been challenged.) Alice raised Marilyn in a confined environment with little love or support. Marilyn wasn't allowed to play with other children and had to come home directly after school. If she didn't, she would pay the price in welts and bruises.

    A man named L.C. Russell lived across the street with his wife and kids. Russell was 14 years older than Marilyn, but that didn't matter to either. She craved love and human contact, and he became the father of Terrell. Despite the awkward situation, Russell stayed in the neighborhood with his family.

    Marilyn tried to keep her pregnancy a secret from her mother and stepfather, but could only do so for only so long. One night Marilyn's younger sister ran away to live with an aunt. She remained at home with Terrell, who was just a baby.

    Terrell Owens is one of the most popular—and controversial— players in the National Football League (NFL). The Alabama native is considered one of the most talented wide receivers in professional football, but has drawn added attention for his battles with his coaches, team executives, and even his fellow players that often play out in the media. In 2004,he was involved in a tense contract dispute with his longtime team, the San Francisco 49ers, over a planned move to the Philadelphia Eagles roster. He has been scorned by sportswriters for what they view as his unsportsmanlike behavior. Those critics, along with "many NFL owners and league executives," Owens wrote in his 2004 autobiography Catch This! : "don't know where I came from or what I believe in. They don't want to know too much about the hired hands who make their football machines go. They want us to do our jobs and stay in our places and shut up."

    Terrell was drafted by the San Francisco 49ers in the third round of the 1996 NFL draft, spending 8 seasons with the team. Owens’ made his mark in the league by amassing a highlight reel of spectacular plays and performances. These include a game-winning touchdown against the Green Bay Packers in a 1998 wild-card playoff games that was dubbed “The Catch II”, a record-breaking day of December 17, 2000 when he surpassed the 50 year old mark for the single-game reception total, and his role in leading the 49ers to the second greatest comeback in NFL playoff history, which occurred against the NY Giants in 2002.

    In 2004, Owens joined the Philadelphia Eagles. His presence made an immediate impact on the team. He averaged one touchdown per game, helping the Eagles to win 13 of its first 14 games, paving the way to Super Bowl XXXIX. Despite a late season injury that doctors had projected would take weeks to heal, Owens started the game and had nine receptions and 122 yards in a disappointing loss to the New England Patriots.
