From the moment his positive drug test became public on Aug. 18, Junior dos Santos proclaimed his innocence.

On Monday, the United States Anti-Doping Agency agreed with him.

USADA announced in a news release that dos Santos, as well as Antonio Rogerio Nogueira and Marcos Rogerio de Lima, had taken tainted supplements from two compounding pharmacies in their native Brazil.

Each of the fighters accepted a six-month suspension and are immediately eligible to compete.

From the USADA news release:

“Unlike retail pharmacies and drugstores, which receive their drug inventories from commercial manufacturers, compounding pharmacies prepare their medications onsite according to specifications contained in a written prescription. In addition to medications, both compounding pharmacies investigated by USADA also produced and sold nutritional supplements, and marketed their products as a safe alternative to mass produced medications and supplements. The pharmacies also claimed to utilize manufacturing processes designed to eliminate the possibility of cross-contamination.

“Despite their claims, the compounding pharmacies, located in Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo, Brazil, sold contaminated supplements to Junior dos Santos Almeida and Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, who each tested positive for hydrochlorothiazide, and Marcos Rogerio de Lima, who tested positive for hydrochlorothiazide and anastrozole. These substances are prohibited at all times under the UFC Anti-Doping Policy, which has adopted the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) Prohibited List.

“After testing supplements the athletes provided to USADA, the WADA-accredited laboratory in Salt Lake City confirmed the presence of multiple prohibited substances in the products. Through an ongoing investigation, USADA independently sourced supplements from the compounding pharmacies, which the Salt Lake City laboratory confirmed were also contaminated with hydrochlorothiazide, anastrozole, and several additional prohibited

It feels almost surreal that Junior dos Santos and Alistair Overeem are finally going to meet in the Octagon. We have been so close to this dream match before that I’m reluctant to write about it even now for fear that there will be a last minute injury or drug test failure and we’ll be denied the contest again.

Why is it such a good match up? Well the crux of it is that Alistair Overeem has every tool necessary to be a heavyweight great, but a chin that would be of more use at a Jewish wedding. Junior dos Santos, meanwhile, is one of the biggest hitters in the history of the sport and brilliant at every offensive application of boxing but has all the lateral movement and ringcraft of a barge. It’s lovely to pretend that a fighter is unbeatable until they lose, but for pure entertainment value you can’t beat a pair of fighters who constantly walk a knife edge between victory and disaster.

Overeem is arguably the most accomplished kickboxer in the UFC today having won a K-1 grand prix though Mark Hunt accomplished the same in 2001. Overeem was always a strange prospect for K-1 because he ended up being one of their biggest stars, but kept winning fights in a way which wasn’t cricket. Early on K-1 found that Overeem could put his ear muffs on, march forwards, grab the opponent behind the head and knee them into unconsciousness. K-1 specifically changed the rules to disallow two handed collar ties just to prevent this.

When Overeem found himself being shown up by the polish of Remy Bonjanksy, he decided he’d simply keep throwing Bonjanksy to the floor if the referee wasn’t going to do anything about it. That is not to say that Overeem was short of neat tricks in the striking department though. His cheat punches / shifting lead up-jabs that flowed into his knees, low kicks and throws are something anyone can learn from. Here’s a little video highlight of some of Overeem’s best work i

UFC mixed martial arts event in 2019

UFC on ESPN: Ngannou vs. dos Santos (also known as UFC on ESPN 3) was a mixed martial arts event produced by the Ultimate Fighting Championship that was held on June 29, 2019, at Target Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA.

    Background

The event was the promotion's third visit to Minneapolis and the first since UFC on FX: Browne vs. Bigfoot in October 2012.

A welterweight rematch between the former UFC Welterweight ChampionsTyron Woodley and Robbie Lawler was expected to be the event headliner. Woodley won the title in their first encounter via first-round knockout in July 2016 at UFC 201. However, it was reported on May 16, 2019, that Woodley had suffered a hand injury and was pulled out of the fight. As a result, Lawler was removed from the card as well. Subsequently, a heavyweight bout between the former UFC Heavyweight ChampionJunior dos Santos and former title challenger Francis Ngannou was scheduled as the event headliner instead. The pairing had been scheduled twice before, first at UFC 215 and then at UFC 239, but in both instances the fights were scrapped.

A light heavyweight bout between Roman Dolidze and Vinicius Moreira was scheduled to take place at the event. However, an unknown reason saw Dolidze pull out of the fight on May 7 and he was replaced by Eryk Anders.

A featherweight bout between Chas Skelly and Jordan Griffin was originally scheduled for this event. However, on June 13, Skelly pulled out of the fight citing injury. Griffin was then booked to face promotional newcomer Vince Murdock. On June 27, Murdock announced that he was not medically cleared to compete and the bout was removed from the card. On September 5, 2019, it was reported that Murdock had received a 20-month suspension by USADA, having tested p
