Ondine is proud to release this disc of choral works dedicated to Estonian composer Galina Grigorjeva (b. 1962). The works, recorded in the presence of the composer, are being performed by the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir conducted by Paul Hillier.
Galina Grigorjeva, originally born in Ukraine, is known for her deeply spiritual and timeless sacred vocal works. The title piece of the disc, Nature Morte, is a powerful spiritual work based on poetry by Joseph Brodsky (1940-1996). Some elements of folk music can also be heard in the vocal suite Svjatki which uses Russian folk texts. Other vocal pieces on the disc follow traditional Latin and Slavic liturgical texts.
The recordings by the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir have gathered positive reviews in the worldwide press. This recording is the fifth release by the choir on Ondine.

- Abstract
- This study will examine Galina Grigorjeva’s compositional style and the influence of the Russian Orthodox tradition on her choral music. Grigorjeva, born in 1962, is a Ukraine-born Estonian composer, and has written over seventy compositions to date, twenty-two of which are choral works. She currently works as a freelancer composer in Tallinn, Estonia. This study begins with Grigorjeva’s professional biography and an overview of her background and education. It includes a discussion of Byzantine and Znamenny chants and how these traditions contribute to a deeper understanding of Grigorjeva’s music. It will then discuss some of the musical influences and the characteristics of Grigorjeva’s music, including her approach to rhythm, text, harmony, texture, timbre, and melody. Three selected choral works—On Leaving (1999), Nature Morte (2008), and In paradisum (2012)—which collectively exemplify the composer’s unique compositional style will then be investigated. Additionally, this study will offer an annotated catalog of Grigorjeva’s entire choral output to benefit readers in adding fresh choral repertoire. The purpose of this exploration is to introduce this great composer and her works to choral musicians looking for hid

Galina Grigorjeva (b.1962) was born in the Crimea, studied at Odessa Conservatory, graduated in 1991 from Juri Falik’s class at the St Petersburg Conservatory, and completed her Master’s degree in 1998 at the Estonian Music Academy under the supervision of Lepo Sumera. She is currently a truly original composer in Estonia. The state of her musical focus is something akin to Arvo Pärt tintinnabuli works, yet musical colour is given to the works by her Slavic cultural heritage, where Grigorjeva feels belonging. The texts of her works are mostly chosen from Russian sources: Russian folk songs and Russian poets, and increasingly, she has turned to texts from the Russian Orthodox Church, and has studied earlier Russian Orthodox Church music and the spiritual verse forms. These studies have deeply affected her –the human voice, melody, and aspects of early music are discernable in her instrumental works.
