This week we are continuing our 2000s fashion series with TV star-turned fashionista Nicole Richie.
It may seem like The Simple Lifewas airing yesterday, but it’s actually been almost 16 years since the show premiered on December 2, 2003.
Ms. Richie may not be as well-known has as her former BFF Paris Hilton, but she’s definitely famous in the fashion world. This is thanks in part to Nicole Richie’s 2000s style. Today we are going to break it down a bit and reflect on her history and see what she’s up to today!

Nicole Richie was born in Berkeley, California on September 21, 1981. She was taken in by Lionel Richie when she was three years old after her biological parents, Karen Moss and Peter Michael Escovedo, realized they could not properly provide for their daughter. Her parents were good friends of Lionel Richie and he and his wife at the time, Brenda Harvey, adopted Nicole when she was nine years old.
Nicole graduated from Montclair College Prep School, and attended Arizona State University where she studied Arts and Media, though she did not graduate. She returned home to California two years into her college career when she could not choose a definitive path.
In 2003, Nicole signed on for the reality show The Simple Life alongside BFF Paris Hilton. The show, one of the first celebrity reality series, would become emblematic of the early 2000s. Lionel Brockman Richie Jr. (born June 20, 1949) is an American singer, songwriter, record producer, and television personality. He rose to fame in the 1970s as a songwriter and the co-lead singer of the Motown group Commodores; writing and recording the hit singles "Easy", "Sail On", "Three Times a Lady", and "Still" with the group before his departure. In 1980, he wrote and produced the US Billboard Hot 100 number one single "Lady" for Kenny Rogers.
In 1981, Richie wrote and produced the single "Endless Love", which he recorded as a duet with Diana Ross; it remains among the top 20 bestselling singles of all time, and the biggest career hit for both artists. In 1982, he officially launched his solo career with the album Lionel Richie, which sold over four million copies and spawned the singles "You Are", "My Love", and the number one single "Truly".
Richie's second album, Can't Slow Down (1983), reached number one on the US Billboard 200 chart and sold over 20 million copies worldwide, becoming one of the best-selling albums of all time; and spawned the number one singles "All Night Long (All Night)" and "Hello". The outspoken, wise-cracking comedic socialite and star of The Simple Life (2003), Nicole Camille Escovedo was born in Berkeley, California on September 21, 1981. She is the adopted daughter of singer Lionel Richie and his then-wife, Brenda Harvey, and socialite Paris Hilton's former best friend. Richie had been looked after by the Richies since she was 2-years-old but was not legally adopted by them until she was nine-years-old. Shortly after Nicole's adoption was formalized, Lionel's affair with another woman became public knowledge which resulted in a bitter split, which was highly publicized by the tabloid press. Nicole began attending weekly sessions with a psychotherapist and remained in therapy throughout her childhood. Lionel later re-married, giving Nicole two half-siblings: Myles (born 1994) and Sofia (born 1998). In 1986, Richie started kindergarten at The Buckley School, in Sherman Oaks, California, where she met Paris Hilton. Richie graduated from Montclair College Preparatory School in 1999. She also studied Arts and Media for two years at the University of Arizona before dropping out and returning to California.
