Dr. Vishwanathan N Bringi

(B.Tech. '71, Elec. Engg., H5)

Viswanathan N. Bringi, a pioneering researcher in radar meteorology, passed away on December 18, 2024, in Fort Collins at the age of 75.

Born July 17, 1949, in Bombay  Bringi earned his Bachelor of Technology in Electrical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay in 1971. After a year at Voltas, Bringi joined Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio in 1972. 

He completed his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering at The Ohio State University, focusing on polarimetric radar and its applications in atmospheric science. His groundbreaking work established polarimetric Doppler radar as a key tool for studying precipitation and improving weather forecasting.

Bringi joined Colorado State University in 1981, where he became a full professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. He co-authored the foundational text Polarimetric Doppler Weather Radar and published more than 200 research papers. He was the lead editor for a three-volume book on Advances in Weather Radar.

His work has earned numerous awards, including the American Meteorological Society’s Remote Sensing Prize in 2012. He collaborated internationally and influenced radar meteorology globally. He was considered to be one of the top scientists in

    The Vietnam War (1965-1973): Forrest serves in the Vietnam War as a soldier, where he befriends Bubba, Lieutenant Dan Taylor, and meets Jenny Curran, his love interest.

    real life : 58,000 American deaths. Many imprisoned & tortured . Many vets had PTSD . Many American vets later became homeless, unable to deal with day to day life. After Ford pardoned Nixon 1974, in 1977, President Carter pardoned those who had escaped the military draft & had gone to Canada. The draft still exists today but is NOT in use & it's called Selective Service. Military has been purely voluntary after 1975. All males at 18, however, are still expected to sign up, or they can't get grants & loans for college .

    Ping Pong Diplomacy (1971): Forrest travels to China as a member of the U.S. ping pong team, which leads to improved relations between the United States and China.

    Watergate scandal (1972-1974): Forrest inadvertently exposes the Watergate break-in as a security gu
