Todd McShay

American football television analyst and commentator (born 1977)

Todd Marshall McShay (born March 22, 1977) is an American football television analyst and commentator.

Early life

McShay attended North Shore Christian School in Lynn, Massachusetts and then Swampscott High School in Swampscott, Massachusetts, where he played quarterback for the Big Blue, and graduated in 1995.

He then attended the University of Richmond, where he was a walk-on for the Spiders in 1995 and served as a scout-team quarterback before sustaining a back injury that ended his college career.

He graduated from Richmond in 1999 with a B.A. from the Jepson School of Leadership Studies.

Professional career

McShay had worked as an undergraduate team equipment manager at the University of Richmond before landing an internship with former NFL scout Gary Horton in 1998. Following graduation, McShay worked full-time for "The War Room", (1999–2006) a start-up publication created by Horton eventually bought by ESPN and renamed "Scouts Inc."

He joined ESPN in 2006 as a football analyst, providing in-depth scouting information on college football players across the country. He made regular appearances on a number of ESPN programs, including ESPNU Coaches Spotlight, SportsCenter, and ESPN Radio focusing on the NFL Draft. He was often featured alongside ESPN college football analyst Mel Kiper, Jr.

On September 7, 2021, McShay announced he was taking a break from ESPN "to focus on my health and my family". This came three days after an unsteady performance while working as a sideline reporter on an ESPN college football broadcast, during which viewers expressed concern on social media about his well-being during an on-air segment. McShay returned to on-air work with ESPN on October 27, 2021. He was laid off on June 30, 2023.

It's time to lock in my 2022 NFL draft board. No more game tape, no more pre-draft workouts, no more tinkering. With Round 1 just a couple of days away, my complete rankings for this year's class are final.

What a fun class to evaluate. There are a ton of extremely talented prospects who will make a difference for their new NFL teams immediately, even though there isn't a surefire franchise QB. The wide receiver group is super deep, and the edge rushers and offensive tackles at the top of the class are potential perennial Pro Bowlers. And in talking with execs, scouts and coaches over the past few weeks, it sounds like there isn't much consensus among teams about which prospects are the best of the class at their respective positions, which means things could get interesting very quickly on Thursday.

In all, 262 names will be called over seven rounds and three days, but my personal board goes 366 deep. I've provided our Scouts Inc. grades in parentheses after each player's name, and the first 50 prospects include abridged scouting reports. I also rolled out my full positional breakdown of the rankings at the bottom, which includes 627 prospects in total and as many as 75 per position. Here are my final rankings for the 2022 draft class.

    Overall rankings:
    1-50 | 51-100 | 101-150 | 151-200
    201-250 | 251-300 | 301-366

    Position rankings:
    QB | RB |

UPDATE: I made seven changes to my final mock draft -- starting with the No. 2 pick -- at 2:25 p.m. ET Thursday after a few more conversations with people around the NFL. All newly updated picks are marked with an asterisk below.

Thursday night is going to be exciting. No one knows for sure what the Texans will do at No. 2. Quarterback landing spots are very much still up in the air. And there's plenty of buzz around teams looking to trade up or down the first-round board. Putting together my final mock for the 2023 NFL draft was no easy task -- and I even made some last-minute changes.

After all the prep work, including numerous draft-week calls with sources around the league, I'm projecting all 31 picks in Round 1 one more time. Remember, these predictions are based on what I think each team will do rather than what I think it should do. (And you can tune in to ESPN/ABC/ESPN+ or follow live on Draftcast at 8 p.m. ET to find out what every team actually did do.)

The fun starts early in this mock, and I even projected a trade for one of the first round's more interesting teams. Where will the top quarterbacks land? Which prospects could be surprise selections? How will teams with multiple first-rounders approach their picks? And will we see some chaos in the top 10? Let's take a look with my final projection of Round 1 for 2023.
