Anthony Anderson’s Mom Doris Succeeds in Keeping Emmys at 3-Hour Runtime
Host Anthony Anderson and his mother, Doris Bowman, had quite the time at the 2023 Emmys on Monday.
Anderson announced last week that his mother would be attending television’s biggest night with him and that he and the producers were looking for “smart ways to incorporate her” in the evening’s festivities.
What they found was that, instead of the awards show’s notorious play-off music, Bowman would be the one letting people know when their acceptance speeches were going over the allotted time, and she did her job so well that the broadcast ended exactly when it was supposed to.
Jennifer Coolidge, who received the Emmy Award for best supporting actress in a drama series for The White Lotus, was the first person Bowman had to warn that time was up. Anderson’s mother put up a cardboard sign with a drawing of a clock on it and a red “X,” letting Coolidge know it was time to leave the stage.
“Baby. Baby. Time,” Bowman told the actress.
John Oliver, while accepting the award for best scripted variety series, purposely ran out his clock so that Mama Doris could tell him it was time to wrap up. Once she let him know, he thanked Jesus and his family, playfully referencing Anderson’s opening monologue in which he explained how the “play-off mama” would work.
“If you see my mama, just thank Jesus and your family, and wrap it up,” the night’s host said. “I don’t want anyone to get disrespectful with my mama, because she is from the West Side of Chicago.”
For her final play-off, Bowman created a colorful sign that read “Wrap it up now. Love, Mama,” which she showed to the cast of The Bear as they accepted the award for best comedy series at the 2023 Emmys.
Earlier in the monologue, Anderson noted that everyone tends to ignore play-off m
All About Anthony Anderson's Mom, Doris Bowman
Anthony Anderson’s mom, Doris Bowman, is more than just his parent — she’s also his colleague.
The black-ishactor was born to Bowman on Aug. 15, 1970, in Compton, California. Bowman was a telephone operator and Anderson’s stepfather, Sterling Bowman, owned a chain of three clothing stores.
Bowman was also an aspiring actress but shifted her focus to raising her son after welcoming Anderson, a choice the mother-son pair reflected on in an interview with Entertainment Tonightin June 2023.
"Mom, you sacrificed your dream of becoming an actress to raise me, was it all worth it?" Anderson asked Bowman.
"Yes, baby, it was worth it!" she responded, noting, "I got a house out of it, I got a check every now and then."
Bowman got her big break after appearing in numerous TV shows with her son, most recently hosting FOX's We Are Family game show.
From their six-week European vacation to her supporting the actor as he hosts the 2023 Emmy Awards, here’s everything to know about Anthony Anderson’s mom, Doris Bowman.
She had dreams of being an actress early on
Bowman shared on the Rachael Ray Show in October 2021 that she had wanted to be an actress since she was 17, but when her son came along, she decided to hang up that dream.
“She put her dreams of being an actor on hold to raise an actor, not knowing that’s what she was doing,” Anderson chimed in. “And all these years later, I’m in a position to allow my mother to live her dream and that’s what we’re doing.”
When Ray asked Bowman what it was like to find her fame at 68 years old, Bowman said it was “wonderful,” joking that now she gets a “check.” She added that she was also able to buy her dream home.
She is a mother of two
In addition to Anderson, Bowman is also a mother to her younger son, Derrick Bowman, who is an ICU nurse. In a 2022 episode of HGTV’s Celebrity IOU, Anderson was the guest star
Anthony Anderson Opens Up About Scene-Stealer Mom Doris After Their 6-Week Roadtrip
Anthony Anderson and ‘Mama Doris’ Hancox Bowman have been stamping their respective passports across Europe on the series Trippin’ with Anthony Anderson and Mama Doris. The star and his (scene-stealer) mom spent six weeks venturing through some of the most beautiful destinations across England, France, and Italy. Their memorable vacation started in London with a sightseeing tour and walking the catwalk during African Fashion Week.
From there they checked off bucket list experiences across cities like Paris and Venice. And throughout the two enjoyed luxurious accommodations, wining and dining, shopping, and immersing themselves in the culture. Not a bad gig. Ahead of the finale, we caught up with Anderson about how he celebrated Mama Doris and where the final stop in Rome will lead. He also gives his thoughts and insight about the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike.
[Note: Since Trippin’ with Anthony Anderson and Mama Dorisis a reality show, it does not fall under the SAG-AFTRA strike.]
What kind of feedback have you been getting about the show?
Anthony Anderson: The feedback I’ve gotten has been very disheartening. They keep telling me my mother is the star of the show. That I need to start riding her coattails and get my own career and my own job. People are really enjoying the show and what they’re seeing between my mother and me and this relationship. More importantly, they just enjoy my mother, and rightfully so since she is the star she is.
What did you learn about Mama Doris and yourself from this trip?
I learned my mother is old. She is a young 70-year-old woman. Also, she is an old 70-year-old woman. Just stuck in her ways. What I really learned from this trip is you only live once. My mother is getting up there in age. It’s moments like these that add years to our lives and gives us times and things to cherish. Host Anthony Anderson took the stage at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles at the start of the Jan. 15 award ceremony, poking fun of his childhood crushes on The Facts of Life characters as part of his opening speech. However, it was the comedian's mom Doris Hancox who stole the show, standing up from the crowd to heckle Anthony to "hurry up" with his monologue. (Click here to see all the celebrity red carpet arrivals.) "Shut up!" she told the Black-ish star. "I wanna go to the after-parties." And when Anthony pointed out how she was supposed to serve as the Emmys' "play-off mama"—helping tell winners to "wrap it up" when their acceptance speeches go over the allotted time—Doris had the most mom reaction. "Time's up, baby," she hilariously snarked. "Wrap it up." Though this was Anderson's first time emceeing the star-studded affair, he's no stranger to TV's biggest night. After all, the comedian has 11 Emmy nominations under his belt, including seven Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series nods for his portrayal of Andre "Dre" Johnson in Black-ish. (Click here to see this year's list of nominees.) "Well, since I'm 0 for 11 in the win/loss category of the Emmys, I figured why not host the award that I covet the most and is missing from my shelf," he joked to The Hollywood Reporter earlier this month.
