I saw We Are Familya second time this weekend. Seriously. In spite of the mixed reviews the film has garnered, I wanted to see it again. First, I must confess that I'm not one of the people who hated it from the entertainment point of view. But the reason why I watched it a second time is because I wanted to check whether I'd misunderstood what had appeared to me, at first viewing, to be shockingly backward views about "career women" that had been expressed in and endorsed by the film.
For those who have not seen it yet, here's the story. Maya (Kajol) and Aman (Arjun Rampal) are a divorced couple with three children. The kids stay with mommy while Arjun has moved on to Shreya (Kareena Kapoor). When dad introduces his new girlfriend to the family, it goes without saying that they don't welcome her with open arms. But just as they're all coping with this new development in their lives, Maya is diagnosed with cancer. She comes up with a plan: to get Shreya to move in with the family so that the kids can get used to her because mere baad bhi unko maa ki zaroorat padegi.
It's all rolling along fine until this point as far as I'm concerned. Kajol & Kareena are their usual charismatic selves (Kareena is particularly endearing in We Are Family) and Arjun Rampal gives us further evidence of how much he has evolved through the years. The scenes in which the children react to Daddy's new girl are very well told, not counting the ultimate, rather unrealistic capitulation by the elder daughter. Aachal Munjal, Nominath Ginsberg and Diya Sonecha - the actors playing the three children - are a delightfully un-precocious bunch. By now the world knows that Karan Johar’s We Are Familyis an ‘official’ remake of Hollywood flick Stepmom (). What many might not know is that even the original wasn’t absolutely original and derived its roots from a film No Sad Songs For Me or the American TV series The Other Woman.
Here you have a screenplay originally credited to five Hollywood writers and Indianized by two Bollywood counterparts. By Indianizing Karan Johar doesn’t intend to place the plot in India. The producer can’t get over the NRI fixation and this time stations his story in Australia. Also perhaps an Indian setting could have been less convincing for the fact that a sauteli maa won’t be as sought after as the successor for the kids in a country where extended joint families would be a better bet. The nuclear NRI family setup gives more significance to the being of a stepmom.
For the makers, adding own elements equates to populating the plot with three kids instead of two in the original. Of course director Siddharth Malhotra, an erstwhile assistant to Sooraj Barjatya, also appends a marriage ceremony as an epilogue to the narrative.
The story is about Aman (Arjun Rampal) and Maya (Kajol) who are divorced yet cordially connected for the sake of their three kids. Aman has found new love in Shreya (Kareena Kapoor) and wants her to warm up to his kids. Despite Shreya’s genuine attempts, the kids give her a cold shoulder. And Maya doesn’t want Shreya to be anywhere in the close vicinity of her children. Until she is diagnosed of cervical cancer! Having only a few months to survive, Maya’s prime concern is the future of her kids and suddenly she sees Shreya as her ideal substitute.

Diya Sonecha (born 15 May ) is an Indian television actress best known for her role as Krishna Walia in the Hindi television drama Kasamh Se. Diya Sonecha is an Indian filmmaker, who has worked extensively in Bollywood. Her previous film to hit the theater was “We Are Family” in Diya was born in India. She is Gujarati by the origin and speaks English, Gujarati, and Hindi as well.
She got his big break at the age of 3 when she won millions of hearts for her role as Krishna Walia at Kasamh Se. And the director Siddharth was ready to do anything to have , he was seen getting a box of chocolates to the locations, only for Diya.
Siddharth says, “Diya is a five-year-old kid. One needs to understand the mood of a child. I am a father of kids who are four and eight. So, as a parent, I do understand the child’s requirement.”
Although Diya never delayed the shoot, she had to be pampered in order to get the required shot. The director adds, “She is an important character in the film and is present from the first to the last frame in the film. She had to be pampered."
