Every year Norman Brody brings surprises to his annual concert. There is no program, but you can expect everything from Broadway tunes to Jewish songs to Italian arias to old-time classics and popular songs.

There are costume surprises as well — he has dressed as a cowboy for show tunes from Oklahoma and worn a mask for Phantom of the Opera.

But this Sunday’s performance, accompanied by a four-piece orchestra, has been dubbed “WOW.” It will be Brody’s 30th anniversary concert at Temple Beth El. That means his tenure has spanned a third of the history of the congregation, which is celebrating its 90th anniversary.

Also singing at the concert will be two of the women he mentored when they grew up singing in the choir and doing duets during services. They are Alix Paige, a professional singer and actress, and Jenna Daniels, associate cantor at temple.

“He has this gift,” Rabbi Leonid Feldman said of Brody. “He sees a little bit of a musical talent in somebody and he encourages them, trains them and challenges them.”

“He is my No. 1 partner,” said Feldman, who’s known the cantor 27 years. “He sings at every service, he performs bar mitzvahs, he participates in funerals and weddings.”

Brody has been integral in the life events of all ages. He works a full year with youth ages 12 to 13 preparing them for bar and bat mitzvahs. “We keep in contact through high school — I’ve done their weddings and the baby namings,” he said.

Doing research and playing the piano, he has created medleys of Broadway songs and other compositions. He also belongs to the Cantors Assembly, singing with members in Germany a few years ago, even taking part in a memorial service at a concentration camp. He will travel to Spain in July with an assembly of cantors who will perform concerts. Some congregants are expected, and there will be a side trip to Portugal.
