“I wanted a unique theme song for my show,” says Andy Ross. That need to create a theme song for the 5th season of Maximum Archery, a top-rated program on The Sportsman’s Channel, led Andy to contact Chopper Anderson. Andy had met Chopper years ago when Andy had built a bass amp for Chopper to use while playing in Reba McEntire’s band. Chopper and Andy wrote “Three Legged Dog” and the need to record it led Andy to award-winning producer Doug Grau. Andy and Doug met when Doug was producing The Davisson Brothers Band and Davisson Brothers Band lead singer Donnie Davisson recognized Andy at a Nashville establishment. “Donnie was a big fan of the show and I’m very thankful Donnie introduced himself because I’ve learned a lot about the music business from the Davisson Brothers,” says Andy. When Doug and Andy set out to record “Three Legged Dog” Doug suggested that Andy sing the song, which was a challenge Andy embraced with the drive and determination that Andy had already used to create several multi-million dollar businesses. The song proved to be popular with fans of the show. “I was surprised when I would meet fans and they would have ‘Three Legged Dog’ downloaded on their phone and they would ask me about my music,” remembers Andy.

Encouraged by this response Andy reached out to friends and fans of the show such as chart topping artist Lee Brice, top songwriter Jon Stone, and Andy’s music business mentor Chris Davisson. “I was blown away by the fact that these guys that had such amazing musical accomplishments would help me,” says Andy. These songs built the foundation for Andy’s debut CD Andy Ross. One of the musicians that played on the first recordings for Andy was Little Texas guitarist and front man Porter Howell, which led Andy and Porter to collaborate on a couple of songs for that first CD. “That first CD was a great accomplishment for me,” says Andy, ”but looking back on it I didn’t think that I had made my record, and I went to Porter to

Gunner Ross, Monroe drummer with Ted Nugent, dies

Monroe native Gunner Ross, who gained fame as a drummer with rock ‘n’ roll legend Ted Nugent and other musicians, died Monday after a brief illness. He was 66.

Born Andy Rosinski, Ross was the son of the late Ruth and Raymond Rosinski. He grew up on Bentley Dr. and graduated as a member of Monroe High School's class of 1973.

He showed at an early age that he was a natural drummer. His older sister, Jeri Bacarella, said her brother began playing drums using cardboard boxes. He got his first set of drums as a pre-teen.

“He was amazing the minute he got them and until the day he died,” Bacarella said. “Most importantly, he was a good man. He never met someone he didn’t like. He had a magnetic personality. He was just a lot of fun.”

Ross played drums with Ted Nugent, an avid hunter and Michigan native. Nugent wrote the hit song Fred Bear, in honor of the archery hunting legend who once lived in Grayling in northern Michigan.

In a video released on his Facebook page, Nugent called Ross a “great drummer who put his heart and soul into the story of Fred Bear.”

“Thank you God for sending Gunner Ross into my life and capturing my love of Fred Bear,” Nugent said on the video. “He was an awesome, awesome Detroit slammer.”

As Ross’ career blossomed, he played in a number of bands, including The Knife, The Almighty Struts and Blackfoot with Rickey Medlocke, who later joined Lynryd Skynryd as lead guitarist and singer. He also helped form the band Send More Cops, which sold thousands of albums and whose songs were often played on Detroit-area rock radio stations and opened for such musicians as Eddie Money.

Ross toured with Nugent from 1989 to 1997 and often jammed with Monroe’s Hunter Brucks, who grew up with Ross and considered him a close friend for decades.

“I loved the guy,” Brucks said. “I spent a lot time with him working on music. He was one of the greatest, if not the greatest rock brothers I had.”
