    Pre-Crisis

    Golden Age

Professor Hugo Strange first appears in Detective Comics #36 (February 1940) as a scientist and criminal mastermind who uses a stolen "concentrated lightning" machine to generate a dense fog every night so his gang can rob banks unseen, though he knows that Batman poses a threat to him. Batman, who already knows of Strange's experiments, begins investigating him after one of his henchmen commits a murder. When the robbers are apprehended, Strange vows to set a trap for Batman and deal with him personally. He has a dozen of his men ambush the vigilante, and one of them knocks him out with a blackjack. Batman wakes up in Strange's lair, where Strange hangs him from his wrists and lashes him with a whip. Batman breaks the ropes, gasses the room, and defeats Strange, who is jailed but quickly begins planning his escape.

In Batman #1 (spring 1940), Strange carries out his escape plan, recruits a new gang of criminals, then breaks out five patients from Arkham Asylum and uses them as test subjects, turning them into monsters using an artificial growth hormone. He outfits them with bulletproof clothing, and uses them to rampage through Gotham City and distract the police while his men commit robberies. Strange administers the serum to Batman after the giants capture him

    Arkham Asylum

Fictional psychiatric hospital in DC Comics

This article is about the fictional psychiatric hospital/prison. For the video game, see Batman: Arkham Asylum. For the comic book, see Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on Serious Earth. For other uses, see Arkham Asylum (disambiguation).

Arkham Asylum () is a fictional psychiatric hospital appearing in American comic books published by DC Comics, commonly in stories featuring Batman. It first appeared in Batman #258 (October 1974), written by Dennis O'Neil with art by Irv Novick. Located in Gotham City, the asylum houses patients who are criminally insane, as well as select prisoners with unusual medical requirements that are beyond a conventional prison's ability to accommodate. Its high-profile patients are often members of Batman's rogues gallery.

    History

Located in Gotham City, Arkham Asylum is where Batman's foes who are considered to be mentally ill are brought as patients (other foes are incarcerated at Blackgate Penitentiary). Although it has had numerous administrators, some comic books have featured Jeremiah Arkham. Inspired by the works of H. P. Lovecraft, and in particular his fictional city of Arkham, Massachusetts, the asylum was introduced by Dennis O'Neil and Irv Novick and first appeared in Batman #258 (October 1974); much of its history was established by Len Wein during the 1980s.

Arkham Asylum has a poor security record and high recidivism rate, at least with regard to the high-profile cases—patients, such as the Joker, are frequently shown escaping at will—and those who are considered to no longer be mentally unwell and discharged tend to re-offend. Several of its staff are corrupt or insane.

Gotham criminals deemed "criminally insane" or "mentally unfit" by the court of law are treated at Williams Medical Center before being deemed dangerous enough to be sent to Arkham Asylum.

    —Hugo Strange

Professor Hugo Strange first gained fame as a psychiatrist who declared that he had fully analyzed the Dark Knight from afar, and later lent credence to his own claims by deducing Batman’s true identity as Bruce Wayne. However, his interest in the Batman turned into a deranged obsession, and he used his medical expertise to hatch a series of bizarre plots based around genetics and mind control in order to defeat the hero and take his place as Gotham's savior. But this was not Strange's ultimate ambition: in the event of his victory, Strange's secret "master" had promised him command of forces beyond Batman's comprehension.

    Incident Reports

    Before Arkham Origins Incident

Hugo Strange studied to become a psychiatrist who specialized in analyzing the criminal mind, and it was possible that Batman already caught his attention.

    Arkham Origins Incident

At the beginning of his career, Strange worked as psychiatrist at Blackgate Prison, where he treated its inmates (such as Alberto Falcone). Harleen Quinzel interned under him before she transferred to Arkham Asylum. It was unknown whether or not Strange began his Arkham City plan around this time, although Shiva's involvement in the incident suggests Ra's al Ghul had. It is, however known that he did not enjoy his job very much, as evident by an anecdote by Jonathan Crane, sometime later, the effect of which was that Strange mentioned that he would rather be anywhere other than Blackgate.

He later stole a concentrated lightning machine in order to create dense fogs that he used to mask his robberies of banks. (Detective Comics v1 #36) Strange later escaped from the city asylum along with five insane patients that he used as test subjects in his experiments. Through his experiment, he transformed them into hulking zombies by using a powerful artificial growth hormone that acted on the pituitary gland. Whilst transforming them into giant brutes but it made them mindless in the process. Strange attempted to administer it to Batman as well but the Caped Crusader had created a drug that stopped any of the abnormal secretions from affecting the pituitary gland. (Batman v1 #1) Though believed dead, in reality he came to survive and operate from the shadows. By this point, he had created a 'fear' dust which he planned to disperse across the city to drive people insane. For this task, he hired a number of criminals where they came to help him in this endeavour. During a fight with Batman, the Dark Knight struck Strange with a punch that sent him falling to his apparent death. (Detective Comics v1 #46)

In reality, the Strange had 'died' was simply a mandroid whilst the real one had gone into hiding after faking his death. He then embarked on another attempt to destroy Batman and Bruce Wayne, this time attempting to financially bankrupt Wayne by using various tricks to force three Wayne Enterprises shareholders to sell their stock holdings to him so he could bankrupt the company. He also attempted to frame Batman as a criminal. However, Strange was defeated and sent to prison. Batman was able to stop Strange from further exploiting his knowledge of his secret identity by falsely claiming that he hypnotized Strange to give him a fa
