Ronaldo Luís Nazário de Lima (Brazilian Portuguese:[ʁoˈnawduˈlwiznɐˈzaɾjudʒiˈlimɐ]; born 18 September ), mononymously known as Ronaldo, is a Brazilian former professional footballer who played as a striker. He is the owner and president of La Liga club Real Valladolid. Nicknamed O Fenômeno ('The Phenomenon') and R9, he is considered one of the greatest players of all time. As a multi-functional striker who brought a new dimension to the position, Ronaldo has been an influence for a generation of strikers that have followed. His individual accolades include being named FIFA World Player of the Year three times and winning two Ballon d'Or awards.

Ronaldo started his career at Cruzeiro and moved to PSV in He joined Barcelona in for a then world record transfer fee and at 20 years old, he was named the FIFA World Player of the Year, making him the youngest recipient of the award. In , Inter Milan broke the world record fee to sign Ronaldo, making him the first player since Diego Maradona to break the world transfer record twice. At 21, he received the Ballon d'Or and remains the youngest recipient of the award. By the age of 23, Ronaldo had scored over goals for club and country. However, after a series of knee injuries and recuperation, he was inactive for almost three years. Ronaldo joined Real Madrid in and won the –03 La Liga title. Ronaldo was born Ronaldo Luis Nazario de Lima in Rio de Janiero on September 18,   He was the youngest of three siblings, and began his sporting career playing futsal for various small clubs in Rio.

In Ronaldo became a Goodwill ambassador for the United Nations.  Serving in this capacity he has visited numerous poor and war-torn countries, and is quoted as saying, “No one should be doomed to a life of poverty, whether by birth or as a consequence of war.” [1]

Ronaldo has had three significant relationships.  In he married Brazilian soccer player Milene Domingues.  The couple had a son named Ronald in but divorced three years later.

Less than a year after the divorce Ronaldo announced his romantic involvement with Daniela Cicarelli, a Brazilian model.  This relationship was even more short-lived, and the couple separated only three months after their €, “wedding” (this wedding could not be official because Ronaldo had been divorced from Milene for less than year).

Early Life

Ronaldo Luís Nazário de Lima was born on September 18, , in Itaguaí, Brazil. His parents, Nélio Nazário de Lima and Sônia dos Santos Barata, separated when he was 11, and Ronaldo dropped out of school shortly afterward to pursue a soccer career.

Ronaldo joined the Social Ramos indoor soccer team at the age of 12 before moving on to São Cristóvão, where he was discovered by his future agents, Reinaldo Pitta and Alexandre Martins. The two arranged for the sale of their new client's contract to Cruzeiro, a professional club in the city of Belo Horizonte.
