PART THR Daniel Goleman, PhD, on Emotional Intelligence and Optimal Performance By Dr. Chris Stout LinkedIn Top Voice | Best Selling Author | Adventurer | Startup Whisperer | (Accidental) Humanitarian | APA's "Rockstar" Psychologist | Éminence Grise September 1, 2024 You have likely seen moments of peak performance—perhaps an athlete plays a perfect game or a business that has a quarter with once-in-a-lifetime profits. Perhaps you have experienced something similar – playing a musical piece perfectly, making a faultless shot, or perhaps acing a final. But these moments are often elusive, and for every amazing day, we may have a hundred ordinary or even unsatisfying days. Now, imagine your best day at work - you exceed the goals set for you, your interactions with coworkers are productive and bristle-free, the new system you implemented has boosted productivity company-wide, and you leave the office feeling on top of the world rather than crushed under the weight of it. What if your best day could be every day? Fulfillment, or living a life in full, doesn’t come from isolated peak experiences, but rather from many consistent good days. While achieving this kind of “flow” might seem a rarified, elusive occurrence, what if it was possible for individuals and teams to consistently work at peak performance levels while avoiding burnout and maintaining balance? This is something that Dr. Daniel Goleman knows a lot about. Along with Dr. Cary Cherniss, they have written Optimal: How to Sustain Personal and Organizational Excellence Every Day, which discusses how emotional intelligence can help us have a great day, any day, or said another way, to consistently work at our “optimal” level. Daniel Goleman is a renowned psychologist, author, and science journalist. For twelve years, he wrote for The New York Times, reporting on the brain and behavioral sciences. His 1995 book Emotional Intelligence Book Review: Emotional Intelligence by Daniel Goleman Mallika Desai Intelligence Psychology Daniel Goldman is a science journalist and internationally acclaimed psychologist. He studied and wrote about the brain and behavioural sciences for the New York Times ("About Daniel Goleman", n.d.). He published one of the most influential books of that time, Emotional Intelligence, in 1995. Some of his later works branch off into other aspects of emotional intelligence and include, Healthy Emotions, Destructive Emotions, Leadership: The Power of Emotional Intelligence, etc.The Brain and Emotional Intelligence: New Insights, is his most recent book and here he delves into presenting research on the brain and creativity, as well as what allows optimal performance, a leader to be perceptive and finally how to enhance emotional intelligence itself ("About Daniel Goleman", n.d.). Thus the large body of his work focuses on understanding emotional intelligence and exploring its application in different areas. The book in review in this paper is the international bestseller, Emotional Intelligence. This paper thus aims to simultaneously summarise and critique the book. Goleman states that inspiration for this book came from two psychologists, Peter Salovey and John D. Mayer, who he describes as having co-authored the emotional intelligence theory he presents in his book (Goleman, 1995). They define emotional intelligence as "the ability to perceive accurately, appraise, and express emotion; the ability to access and/or generate feelings when they facilitate thought; the ability to understand emotion and emotional knowledge; and the ability to regulate emotions to promote emotional and intellectual growth" (Mayer & Salovey, 1997, p.10) The book is divided into five main sections that progressively build in the concept of emotional intelligence. He sets the tone of the book by writing in a de .Daniel Goleman, PhD, on Emotional Intelligence and Optimal Performance
