Deborah Margaret Ryland Coyne (born February 24, 1955) is a Canadianconstitutional lawyer, professor, and author. She is the cousin of journalist Andrew Coyne and actress Susan Coyne, and the niece of former Bank of Canada governor James Elliott Coyne.

Biography

Coyne grew up in Ottawa. She graduated from Queen's University with a degree in economics and history in 1976. She received a Bachelor of Laws degree from Osgoode Hall Law School of York University in 1979 and a Master of Philosophy from University of Oxford in international relations in 1982.

She was an employee in the Prime Minister's Office of John Turner, before spending two years teaching constitutional law at the University of Toronto Law School; she has also worked for the Business Council on National Issues, the Ontario Health Service Appeal and Review Board, and the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada.

For years, Coyne dated former Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau. Their child, Sarah Elisabeth Coyne, is Trudeau's only daughter, and attended the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. Her second child, Matthew Coyne, is the son of Canadian journalist Michael Valpy. Valpy and Coyne have since divorced.

Deborah Coyne now lives in Toronto.

Political involvement

Opposition to the Meech Lake and Charlottetown Accords

Deborah Coyne took a role in opposing the Meech Lake Accord, a comprehensive package of constitutional amendments designed to gain the province of Quebec's formal acceptance of the Constitution Act, 1982. Coyne was among many prominent Liberals who disagreed with the Accord, including Pierre Elliott Trudeau, Donald Johnston and Jean Chrétien, although the issue split the federal Liberal caucus.     Justin Pierre James Trudeau (born December 25, 1971) is a Canadian politician who has been the 23rd and current prime minister of Canada since 2015 and the leader of the Liberal Party since 2013. A member of the Liberal Party, he was also the Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs and Youth from 2015 to 2018.

    Trudeau was born in Ottawa, Ontario, as the eldest son of Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, and attended Collège Jean-de-Brébeuf. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from McGill University and a Bachelor of Education degree from the University of British Columbia. After graduating, he taught at the secondary school level in Vancouver, before returning to Montreal in 2002 to further his studies.     Deborah Coyne has written a new memoir detailing her romance with Pierre Trudeau that is igniting debate about how much Canadians really need to know about their politicians' personal lives.

    Coyne, a lawyer who is currently running for leadership of the federal Liberal Party, had a daughter with the late prime minister. In Unscripted: A Life Devoted to Building a Better Canada, Coyne writes at length about the details of their relationship.

    In the past, Coyne has been reticent to discuss her romance with Trudeau and their child (21-year-old Sarah), but now that she's running for office it seems she believes it's important to satisfy some of the public's curiosity.

    "Given that she’s running for significant political office, it’s something people are going to constantly ask about. This is her way of addressing it in an honest, heartfelt, forthright way," publisher Derek Finkle, founder of the Canadian Writers Group, told the Toronto Star.

    The Star is participating in the publication of the memoir, making it available on the newspaper's online store. The book is also available on Kobo and Kindle.

    On Monday, Coyne participated in an online chat with Star readers and wrote that she believes "people are entitled to know about my background ... That includes my relationship with Pierre Trudeau."

    Of course, matters are complicated by the fact that Trudeau's first son from his marriage with Margaret is the front-runner in the same Liberal leadership race Coyne is running in. Asked by a Star reader whether Pierre would appreciate the fact that she is running against Justin, Coyne was terse.

    Writing in The Globe and Mail, Margaret Wente describes the younger Trudeau and Coyne as "temperamental opposites," neither of whom can "remotely fill the shoes of the giant who inspired them."

    According to the article, Sarah Elisabeth Coyne was just 9 when her father, Pierre Elliott Trudeau passed away. “Born May 5, 1991, Coyne’s birth evaded the public spotlight that was shone on her three half-brothers who were born during Trudeau’s years as prime minister.”
