Jean-Pierre Ponnelle (French pronunciation:[ʒɑ̃pjɛʁpɔnɛl]; 19 February 1932 – 11 August 1988) was a French operadirector, set and costume designer.

Ponnelle was born in Paris. He studied philosophy, art, and history there and, in 1952, began his career in Germany as a theatre designer for Henze's opera Boulevard Solitude. He was greatly influenced by the work of art director Georges Wakhévitch who also designed sets and costumes for the theatre, the ballet, and the opera.
In 1962, Ponnelle directed his first production of Wagner's Tristan und Isolde in Düsseldorf. His production of that work at the Bayreuth Festival in 1981 was widely praised as one of the most aesthetically beautiful in its history.
His work throughout the world included stage productions at the Metropolitan Opera and the San Francisco Opera, and filmed versions of operas such as Rossini's Il barbiere di Siviglia conducted by Claudio Abbado with Hermann Prey in 1972, Puccini's Madama Butterfly in 1974 conducted by Herbert von Karajan with Plácido Domingo, Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro conducted by Karl Böhm with Hermann Prey in 1976, Rossini's La Cenerentola conducted by Claudio Abbado with Frederica von Stade in 1981, Verdi's Rigoletto conducted by Riccardo Chailly with Luciano Pavarotti in 1983, and Mozart's Così fan tutte conducted by Nikolaus Harnoncourt with Edita Gruberová in 1988. His 1969 production of Mozart's then neglected La Clemenza di Tito for the Cologne Opera helped re-establish this work in the repertory. Ponnelle also was a frequent guest at the Salzburg Festival.
His productions were often controversial. In 1986, Verdi's Ai Company in Oslo, Norway The Norwegian National Opera and Ballet (Norwegian: Den Norske Opera & Ballett) is a Norwegian opera company and ballet company. The first fully professional company each for opera and ballet in Norway and the only such professional organisation in the country, it is currently resident at the Oslo Opera House, since the spring of 2008. Founded in 1957, the company had Kirsten Flagstad as its first general manager, from 1958 to 1960, and placed an emphasis on presenting operas and ballets written by Norwegian composers, and Norwegian as the standard language of the opera singers. Subsequent general managers have included Bjørn Simensen. The Ballet School at the Norwegian National Opera & Ballet was founded in 1965. In January 2009, the Norwegian Opera and Ballet was reorganized, during the tenure of Tom Remlov as general managing director. The company's current general manager is Nils Are Karstad Lysø. In the 1980s and 1990s, Den Norske Opera campaigned for a number of years for construction of a new opera house, with preference in the Bjørvika district, a harbour area of downtown Oslo. The Oslo Opera House was opened in the spring of 2008. In 2008 Radio Marconi, an Italian company, installed a seatback multimedia system, from an idea of Geir Mortil of the Norwegian National Opera & Ballet, allowing audiences to follow opera libretto in other languages in addition to the original language. The current chief executive officer of the company is Geir Bergkastet. Past artistic directors of the opera company have included Paul Curran (2009–2011), Anne Gjevang (as interim director), Per Boye Hansen and Annilese Miskimmon (2017–20). Randi Stene is the current opera director of the company. While studying at the Royal Swedish Academy of Music (Stockholm), Anders Larsson joined the Gothenburg Opera House in 1994 and was the first prize winner of the Swedish Placido Domingo National Contest. Gian Carlo Menotti selected him to sing Eugene Onegin at the Spoleto Festival dei Due Mondi 1996 and the next year Anders was Sweden’s representative in BBC Cardiff Singer of the World 1997. Anders Larsson was 1999 invited to the Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie, Brussels, Belgium to sing Pelléas in Debussy’s Opera Pelléas et Mélisande conducted by George Benjamin and 2001 to the Glyndebourne Festival Opera, England to sing the Count Almaviva in Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro. In 2007 he sang Mandryka in Christof Loy's fantastic new production of Arabella at Gothenburg Opera House 2007. Anders Larsson has sung leading roles as a guest artist with several other important theatres and Orchestas internationally, including the Frankfurt Opera (Germany), The Royal Danish Theatre, Gran Teatre del Liceu (Spain), Berlin State Opera (Germany), Teatro Real (Spain), Minnesota Orchestra and San Francisco Symphony Orchestra to name just a few. .Norwegian National Opera and Ballet
