The title 'Sounding the Seventh Trumpet' takes its name from the Book of Revelation, specifically referencing chapter 11 and the sounding of the last (seventh) trumpet, heralding the end of the world. Valary DiBenedetto (M. Shadows' future wife) performs vocals on the track "The Art of Subconscious Illusion." The album was released on vinyl for the first time in in the US.

Production

Sounding the Seventh Trumpet was recorded in eight days in November , with a budget of only $2, When the band members got into the studio, The Rev recorded all the drums in one take, and the other members of the band added their parts to what he had laid down. Zacky Vengeance played lead guitar originally. When Synyster Gates joined the band in early , they recorded a heavy metal version of "To End the Rapture", with Gates playing lead guitar. This version was first seen on the Warmness on the Soul single, and was later featured on the re-release of Sounding the Seventh Trumpet. This is the only album to feature bassist Justin Sane (not to be confused with Justin Sane of Anti-Flag), who also played piano. He was briefly replaced by Dameon Ash during the album's touring cycle, who was then replaced by Johnny Christ.

Early life and musical influence[]

Shadows was born Matthew Charles Sanders on July 31, , in Huntington Beach, California. He attended Huntington Beach High School, where after a brief stint in the band Successful Failure, he went to an old friend James Sullivan and began to form the earliest incarnations of Avenged Sevenfold.

Shadows has made guest appearances on numerous albums by various artists. He also produced The Confession's album, Requiem, which, according to an interview, was one of the first steps which led to Avenged Sevenfold self-producing their self-titled album.

In October , the band announced that Shadows was experiencing problems in his vocal cords, due to their active touring, and that his doctor advised him to take a short break from touring to prevent further damage. After the release of City of Evil a false rumor started circulating, saying that the reason that he dropped screaming vocals was either due to a ripped vocal cord or a blown blood vessel in the back of his throat. Early life

Matthew Charles Sanders was born on July 31, , in Fountain Valley, California, and raised in Huntington Beach, California. He is of Irish and Italian descent. He was raised Roman Catholic. His sister is former WNBA player Amy Sanders. His interest in rock was from listening to bands like Guns N' Roses earlier in life after his father gave him his first cassette, and his interest in heavy metal music grew as he became older and began to play the guitar. He links his early musical experience with the piano as a major factor in developing his skills with the guitar and his voice. He attended Huntington Beach High School, where he played for a brief stint in a punk band named "Successful Failure". Following this, Shadows formed Avenged Sevenfold in along with middle school friends Zacky Vengeance, The Rev, and Matt Wendt.

Stage name

Shadows, like the other members of Avenged Sevenfold other than Brooks Wackerman, uses a stage name. In an interview, Shadows says that he chose his stage name because he thought of himself as "the darker character in the group". The 'M' is in place of his first name, Matthew, which he did not want to be in his stage name because of the way it sounded. He also added that he and the band took stage names because many other successful musicians that they were influenced by had them (e.g. Slash of Guns N' Roses, Munky of Korn and the members of Slipknot).
